Pregnancy sex tips: Keeping the spark alive

When switching from the role of man and woman to Daddy and Mommy, it is common for your relationship to be pushed to the wayside. Most couples would agree that sex is an important part of a relationship, yet intimacy seems like the first thing that gets tossed out the window once your belly starts growing bigger. Find out tips to keep the intimate connection strong when you are expecting.

For some parents-to-be, it is fear of harming the growing baby in utero that is keeping passions at bay. But, according to Dr. Alan Gibstein, an assistant professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the NYU College of Medicine, “As long as there are no indications of complications in her pregnancy, there are very few limitations to continuing a normal, pleasurable, and mutual sex life through a normal pregnancy.”

So, even though you know that it is safe to have sex while you’re sporting the baby bump, you still may not be in the mood. Especially in your first trimester, your sex drive may be more than lacking…it may likely be non-existent. All-day-sickness, bloating, and a big heaping dose of exhaustion are sure to squelch those flames of passion.

In the spirit of keeping the lovin’ alive, here are a few tips on keeping your connection, even when sex is the last thing on your to-do list.

Don’t Skimp on the Foreplay
Never underestimate the power of foreplay, especially when celebrating this growing bond between you and your partner. It’s important to take the time to light some candles, turn on some soft music, and make your bedroom your “O” haven.

Remember when making out was so hot? It still is, especially knowing you don’t have to stop at third base! So go in for a deep kiss and grope away. This is not time for holding back, now that the responsibility of avoiding pregnancy is a non-issue.

Switch it Up
If you haven’t discovered it already, it is likely that your favorite positions are less than comfortable or convenient. Now’s the time for variety, ladies! Take the initiative to lay side-by-side, try the spooning position, or get up on your hands and knees and have him stand behind you. Not only will these positions take the pressure off your growing belly, your man will think you are spicing things up!

The Other Side of Intimacy
Even if the physical act of intercourse isn’t on the menu this particular night, the power of touch is a marvelous thing…especially when there is massage oil involved. Taking the time to connect and bond with one another can be just as intimate as intercourse itself. Take turns massaging each other; draw a warm (but not hot!) bubble bath and indulge together; write each other notes to be found throughout the day; get out of the house and have a romantic candlelit dinner; or take an evening stroll and remember to do lots of hand holding.

Made a sexy date
When all else fails, make a date and keep it. Even when you’re not in the mood, chances are you can be easily convinced once contact is made. If not, a gentle reassurance to your partner may help ease the letdown and help you reaffirm your commitment to one another. Take advantage of your alone time now; if this is your first child, chances to hit the sheets may become slimmer as children are added to the mix!
