Health benefits of nuts

You’ve heard that nuts are great for your health. They’re packed with protein, fiber, antioxidants and vitamin E, all of which keep your body happy and healthy. And research suggests people who eat nuts are 40 percent less likely to die of heart disease than non-nut eaters. But some nuts are better than others. Here are the best nuts for your health.

Mixed Nuts

Almonds

When it comes to nuts, almonds are Queen. Not only are they renowned for lowering the body’s “bad” cholesterol, they’re also packed with heart-healthy nutrients like magnesium, potassium and vitamin E. What’s more, just by eating a few almonds a day, you’re guaranteed to improve the health of your colon. A recent study suggests the nut’s natural oils and high fiber content nourish the digestive tract’s lining.

Nutritional information: 24 almonds = approximately 160 calories

Cashews

There’s a reason nut companies add cashews to their trail mix. Not only are they lower in fat than most other nuts, they’re also packed with heart-healthy antioxidants and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (at doses equivalent to some fish!). They’re also loaded with copper, magnesium, zinc and iron, so they keep your energy level up, no matter what activity you’re doing.

Nutritional information: 20 cashews = approximately 170 calories

Walnuts

Second to almonds in the “best nuts in the world” category, walnuts are a great source of heart and cardiovascular system protecting nutrients. They’re loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory benefits (important for people suffering from asthma or arthritis). They’re also loaded with ellagic acid, known for its cancer-fighting abilities. And getting your daily dose will strengthen your heart’s arteries and stave off the build-up of plaque caused by “bad” cholesterol.

Nutritional information: 14 walnuts = approximately 180 calories

Pecans

Recent research has shown pecans can significantly lower a person’s cholesterol and improve heart health. That’s probably because they’re an excellent source of dozens of key vitamins and minerals. One serving of these sweet nuts will provide you with enough vitamin E, folic acid, calcium, magnesium and zinc to keep your body energized, and because they’re loaded with fiber, they’ll keep you feeling fuller, longer.

Nutritional information: 20 pecans = approximately 190 calories

How to get more nuts in your diet

Now that you know the best nuts for your health, here are some sneaky ways to get more of them in your diet:

  • Top hot or cold cereal with nuts
  • Add nuts to yogurt
  • Replace croutons on a salad with chopped nuts
  • Add mixed nuts to bread or pancake mix

Annnnd now Paula Abdul takes it all back. Or is misquoted. Or whatever.

Just days after Paula Abdul's long-term struggle with painkillers was made public in an interview she did with Ladies' Home Journal, she's denying pretty much all of it. That took less time than it does to reveal who is getting booted from "American Idol", didn't it?

Abdul claims she was misquoted and that her admission about going to rehab was taken out of context. The detox she says (now) that she had was a "mud baths and facials" kind of drying out, not a pills and whatever else kind of clean-up. Never mind that she detailed her withdrawal symptoms in the interview.

She's sticking by her previous statements, saying (yes, again), "I've never checked into a rehab clinic. I've never been addicted or abused drugs, and I've never abused alcohol. I've never even been drunk in my life."

Ladies' Home Journal is also sticking to their story, saying (ahem), "We definitely stand by out reporting. We're happy that she shared her journey with us."

Abdul says it's all been very stressful and I would imagine that the magazine is just smiling and nodding while the cha-ching cha-ching of this issue's sales start rolling in.

I did note that Paula Abdul has not been quoted as directly saying she is an addict. I thought that might be strategic on her part. And honestly, she is the person who has to say that first before any of us can hang the big sign over her head. But I am pretty sure than no matter what label we put on it, the backpedaling, odd behavior, and excuses -- not to mention how much of it has been aired on "American Idol" and her own reality show -- do indicate this woman's pretty deep in her own mess.

Call yourself what you will, Paula. But I've officially lost patience and all belief in your constantly changing story.

Are you surprised Paula Abdul's crying wolf on how extensive her problem with painkillers really is?
